Links help users find the information they are looking for. They work by connecting web pages, images and documents through descriptive text. This ensure users can quickly find what they are looking for.

Links can be documents, images or pages within the same website or on an external website. Please ensure links are relevant and provide meaningful information and user experience – don’t just link for the sake of linking!

External links

External links point from one website to a separate website or domain. These links connect to information from resources other than from La Trobe. Links should open in a new window, ensuring users stay on our site, while navigating to the external site.

  • e.g. https://www.latrobe.edu.au > https://www.vtac.edu.au

Note: Please use https:// links. Our CMS only allows links to secure webpages.

Internal links

Internal links point to places within the same website or domain. Internal links can include web pages, images or documents. We use asset IDs for these links. This ensures if the asset moves location on the website it will not break the link. To link to the asset, simple add in the asset ID into the space where you are asked to enter a URL.

Inbound and Outbound links

These terms are more relevant to SEO and search engine rankings and have a different meaning to internal and external links.

  • An inbound link is a hyperlink coming from another website to your own.
  • An outbound link is a hyperlink is from your website to a different website.

Search engine algorithms will rank the quality and quantity of links to your site. However, it’s not the more the merrier. Relevant and authoritative information will ensure content is useful to users accessing it. If your content meets the audience’s needs, search engines will notice. This will help your page rank higher in organic search results.
