When you accept the responsibilities of a CMS editor it is important to understand the expectations of your role.
A CMS editor role requires you to regularly update and maintain content on a webpage.
Whilst managing and editing content is vital, presenting content in line with La Trobe’s standards, guidelines and policies is also crucial.
Ensure you are familiar with these key documents editors must abide by:
- Website operational procedure
- Website operational framework policy
- Website and intranet compliance procedure
- Editorial Style Guide.
Why is it important to keep up to date?
No one wants to find out about an old morning tea event from 2013. Nor would they want to navigate to a broken link or download an outdated application form. This provides poor user experience and you may lose your visitor and your site’s credibility.
As the editor and publisher for your website, you have the responsibility to know that content on your site is up to date and accurate, and to update it if it is not. This includes content, images, documents and links.
We recommend looking at your website through the eyes of a visitor. Is the content fresh, engaging and in line with your objectives? Does it provide the information your user is looking for e.g. booking information, location details or research information.
We recommend using the Web content review checklist as a guide for each of your pages.

Editor permissions are not guaranteed

Our editor guidelines require a commitment of 1-3 hours per week to review, maintain and audit your website content.
Lack of time, or ability is not a valid justification for not using your web editing privileges. Should you request editor access, you will need to justify why you were previously unable to edit pages.
